Farm Credit Administration Symposium: Trends in Rural America Session

On February 19, RUPRI Director of Strategic Initiatives Teresa Kittridge presented testimony at a Farm Credit System Symposium: The Factors Influencing Consolidation and the Potential Impact on Mission Consolidation in the Farm Credit System. RUPRI’s testimony addressed the critical rural impacts of this FCA decision, including the opportunity to significantly enhance rural regional innovation and micro-enterprise development. The testimony reflects RUPRI research findings from a recent study for the USDA Rural Business Services: "Access to Capital in Rural America: Supporting Business Start-up, Growth, and Job Creation in the Wake of the Great Recession."

RUPRI Updates the Isserman County Classification Codes
Recently, RUPRI applied Andy Isserman’s county classification criteria to the 2010 Census data, to update these codes.  The result shows 2,794 counties did not change categories, while 300 counties moved to a different category.  Based on the updated data, 183 counties are classified as “urban;” 194 counties are classified as “mixed urban;” 1,002 counties are “mixed rural;” and 1,764 counties are “rural.”
