Secretary Vilsack Highlights Need for Revitalized Rural Economy

Secretary Vilsack, kicking off the National Rural Summit in Hillsboro, Missouri, calls for a renewed attention to rebuilding and revitalizing our rural economies in a blog posting on the Huffington Post.

The National Rural Summit is being held in Hillsboro, Missouri this week.  Topics for that summit include rural infrastructure and businesses, renewable energy and biofuels, farm competitiveness and productivity, Forest Restoration, Rural Recreation and Private Land Conservation, and Regional Food Systems and Nutrition.  In advance of the Summit, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack took to the blogosphere, with a posting on the Huffington Post about the need to rebuild and revitalize America's rural economy.

In the posting, Secretary Vilsack states:

"To keep farmers on the farm we must maintain a strong farm safety net, but we will also have to build a thriving companion economy to compliment production agriculture in rural America. The improved safety net must pursue new approaches that create more good-paying jobs in rural America, in addition to the time-tested programs that support our abundant agricultural system.....We are working at the President's direction to build a framework of a new rural economy, built on a set of pillars which combine the successful strategies of today and the compelling opportunities of tomorrow."
